NASCAR Legend Darrell Waltrip Diagnosed with Cognitive Disease
In an official Wednesday evening statement from the Waltrip family, it was revealed that Darrell Waltrip, a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion driver and legendary television broadcaster, will step away from the public limelight following the diagnosis of a cognitive disease.
According to the family, Waltrip has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) complicated by possible Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The Waltrip family believes the medical condition stems from injuries sustained during his 29-year NASCAR driving career.
Waltrip is currently experiencing mild noticeable symptoms. The family says otherwise, Waltrip is happy, healthy, and spending time with his wife Stevie, their children, and his grandchildren.

After a consistent performance through the opening three races of the NASCAR Cup Series Chase, Bubba Wallace has vaulted from 14th to 10th in the championship standings; the 23XI Racing driver is gaining confidence heading into the final stretch of the championship fight.
With the next three races being contested on 1.5-mile intermediate ovals, which have been the specialty for Toyota Racing this season, and this weekend’s race being held at Kansas Speedway, a track Wallace has won at before, the driver feels he can go on a generational run to end the Chase.
"I think the next three races is a good indicator of who your champion will be," Wallace said during a Wednesday media Zoom call.
