William Byron Abolishes Summer Slump with Dominant Victory at Watkins Glen
If you were concerned about the pace of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro heading into the NASCAR Cup Series post-season, then William Byron’s performance on Sunday should have mitigated those, after scoring his 5th win of 2023 at Watkins Glen.
Byron, who led a race-high 66 of 90 laps, used an overcut strategy call to take over the lead from Michael McDowell on the first round of pit stops, which allowed the Valvoline Chevrolet to remain in position for the remainder of the event.
“We seem to go through that summer slump in July and August, and for some reason, we just can’t quite put the races together,” Byron told Marty Snider post-race. “I think it’s the racetracks itself.”
Denny Hamlin finished second, with Christopher Bell, AJ Allmendinger, and Ty Gibbs rounding out the top-five. Martin Truex, Jr., Chris Buescher, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, and Joey Logano rounded out the top-10.
