Why Did Trackhouse Racing Cars Drive Through the Grass After Gateway Race?
After taking the checkered flag in Sunday’s Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway, Trackhouse Racing teammates and Playoff contenders Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisbergen did something strange.
Both drivers weaved in and out of the grass on their way back to pit road. Is this something goofy that Chastain and SVG do after each race for fun? Were they expressing their frustrations after subpar finishes of 24th and 25th?
According to Corey LaJoie, no. Responding to another post on X, LaJoie claimed that the two Trackhouse Racing cars were attempting to collect grass, dirt, and other debris in an effort to add weight to their cars for when they took a trip over the scales in post-race inspection.
“They post all the Playoff cars [in inspection],” LaJoie said. “Trying to pick up a couple pounds of grass, rocks, rubber to let you[r] car chief feel a little better when you roll across the scale.”
If you recall back to last season, Alex Bowman initially worked his way into the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, but was disqualified in post-race inspection for failing to meet minimum weight. It seems teams aren’t taking any chances this year, but the grass shenanigans caught the attention of NASCAR.
NASCAR Cup Series Managing Director Brad Moran said on Tuesday morning that NASCAR will speak to Trackhouse about the post-race shenanigans this week.
