Shane Van Gisbergen Goes Back-to-Back with Xfinity Victory at Sonoma
SVG started from the pole, won Stage 1, and ultimately won the overall race in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 at Sonoma Raceway, but boy, oh boy, did he encounter some obstacles.
After staying on track, instead of pitting to set himself up for better track position, at the end of Stage 1, SVG radioed that he felt issues with the steering rack in his No. 97 car. This kept him from contending for the lead for the majority of Stage 2. His crew chief Bruce Schlicker intended for SVG to pit before the end of Stage 2, in an effort to make their ground back up, but didn’t make the call in time.
SVG worked his way back into contention for the win in the final Stage, and on the final restart of the race, he got into a heated on-track battle with Austin Hill for the lead. After some contact in Turn 1, Hill skidded off line, and SVG cruised to the win.
