Shane Van Gisbergen Collects Fifth Win of Rookie Season in Full-Contact ROVAL Showdown
Shane van Gisbergen proved once again that he’s the king of road courses in the NASCAR Cup Series, scoring his fifth win of the season in dominant fashion at the Charlotte Roval. Despite challenges from Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell, van Gisbergen’s ability to manage tire wear over long green-flag runs gave him the edge, as he gapped the field by more than 15 seconds at the finish.
While Larson and Bell opted for a risky pit strategy, hoping for a late caution, the yellow never came, and the No. 88 WeatherTech Chevrolet cruised to Victory Lane.
The real chaos unfolded behind the leader as the final Playoff transfer spot came down to the last lap. Ross Chastain, desperate to beat Joey Logano in points, sat just one point above the cutline as the white flag waved. Denny Hamlin passed Chastain for position, which tied the two drivers, with Logano holding the tiebreaker. In a last-ditch move, Chastain sent it into the final corner and wrecked Hamlin, spinning both cars and crossing the line in reverse.
The dramatic maneuver wasn’t enough, though. Logano beat him to the line and advanced.

NASCAR Cup Series Playoff Round of 8 Field Set
After his last-ditch final lap move at the Charlotte Roval didn’t pay off, Ross Chastain was one of the four drivers, who failed to advance from the Round of 12 of the Playoffs into the Round of 8. Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and Austin Cindric also saw their Playoff runs come to an end on Sunday.
Denny Hamlin will begin the Round of 8 as the No. 1 seed, and he sits just eight points above the cutline.
Riley Herbst (30th) Disqualified for Failing Post-Race Weights
While Shane van Gisbergen celebrated a commanding win at the Charlotte ROVAL, fellow NASCAR Cup Series rookie Riley Herbst saw his day end in frustration. Herbst, piloting the No. 35 Monster Energy Toyota for 23XI Racing, was disqualified after the race for failing post-race weights. This dropped his official finishing result from 30th to 37th.
The weekend was already a rough one for the Las Vegas native, who wrecked in qualifying, was involved in several on-track incidents during the race, and even tangled with Kyle Busch. The disqualification cost Herbst six Cup Series points and shifted several other drivers up a position in the final order, including Austin Cindric. However, it had no bearing on the Playoff outcome.
