Shane Van Gisbergen Slices Through the Field to Remain Perfect at Chicago
After winning the opening Stage of Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series The Loop 110 at the Chicago Street Course in an epic duel with Kyle Larson, Shane van Gisbergen found himself mired deep in the field due to a variety of strategies throughout the field.
However, despite being trapped around 20th-place, and a rash of late-race cautions, SVG had just enough time to march back through the field, and he passed Jesse Love for the lead, and win on Lap 48 of the 50 lap event.
“That’s awesome, what a great race. It was pretty wild there at the end, but can’t thank the Kaulig Racing guys enough, the WeatherTech Camaro was amazing,” said Van Gisbergen. “Had a great race at the start with Kyle [Larson], he was great on the restarts and we made our car better for the second set of tires, but, that was fun at the end passing all those guys, had some great racing with everyone.”

Kyle Larson Defeats Ty Gibbs, Shane Van Gisbergen for Cup Pole at Chicago
Shane van Gisbergen is obviously the favorite to win Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course, but after a solid performance in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race, and notching the pole position for the NASCAR Cup Series race, Kyle Larson has emerged as a serious threat.
Larson, driving the No. 5 Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro, posted a quick lap of 87.836 seconds (which equates to 90.168mph) in Saturday’s group qualifying session, earning the Elk Grove, California-native the 21st NASCAR Cup Series pole of his career.
It’s the fifth pole of 2024 for driver No. 5, the most he’s ever had in a NASCAR Cup Series campaign. Ty Gibbs will start from the outside of the front row, while SVG will lineup from the fifth position on Sunday.
