Shane Van Gisbergen Nudges Past Zilisch For Chicago Street Course Xfinity Win
Nothing could stop Shane van Gisbergen from taking a win in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series The Loop 110 at the Chicago Street Course. Not a potentially faulty carburetor, or a faulty pit strategy that went awry. SVG kept fighting his way back to the front of the field, and on the final restart of the race, the driver of the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet wasn’t afraid to make a little contact on his teammate Connor Zilisch to pick up the win.
Van Gisbergen got into Zilisch slightly in Turn 1 on the restart, which put Zilisch into the wall, and forced Zilisch into a sketchy three-wide situation with Sheldon Creed and Austin Hill. Zilisch would get back by, but couldn’t quite close in enough on SVG to make a move for the win on the final lap.
“Yeah, unreal, thank you. I thought it was going to be a lost cause when the strategy went wrong,” van Gisbergen said on The CW broadcast. “But it worked out well. Thanks to JRM, the car was a rocket. WeatherTech/RedBull, yeah, unreal day.”
While Zilisch stopped short of calling SVG’s race-winning move dirty, he says that he’ll remember it when they race again.
“I guess I should have just not let him get to my bottom. I was clear there, just barely on the front straight. Yeah, it just let him get to the inside, and he took advantage of it,” Zilisch explained. “So, I hate it for my 88 group. I should have just been a little more aggressive there. I just thought he was going to race me a little cleaner. So, yeah, I’ll learn from it and move on. Really cool to have RedBull / WeatherTech schemes 1-2.”
