Sam Mayer Returns to Iowa Victory Lane for Second Straight Year
After three runner-up finishes, including last weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Sam Mayer and the No. 41 Haas Factory Team finally broke through for their first NASCAR Xfinity Series win together in Saturday’s HyVee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway.
Mayer, who took his eighth career NASCAR Xfinity Series win, got around Jesse Love for the race lead with 28 laps to go as Love slipped in a patch of oil on the track, which was laid down by Matt DiBenedetto’s expiring engine.
On the race’s final restart with 16 laps to go, Mayer would scoot away and power to a margin of victory of 3.289 seconds over Love. Ross Chastain would finish third, Connor Zilisch was fourth, and Harrison Burton ended the race in fifth.
Mayer overcame overshooting his pit box on a pit stop in Stage 2 to secure the first-ever win for the Haas Factory Team, which was formed in the offseason from the remains of the Stewart-Haas Racing team.
“I mean, this one is everything, right here. This one’s for all of the guys here at Audibel. There are a lot of people in the stands — the Audibel people. So, it’s really cool to get a win in front of them. First win for Haas Factory Team, that’s awesome,” Mayer said. “This car was as fast as Xfinity Mobile all day long. We tried to botch it on pit road, but we didn’t. I can’t believe it. This is one of the most special wins I have.”

Chase Briscoe Snags Sixth NASCAR Cup Pole of Season, Bests Byron at Iowa
Chase Briscoe, crew chief James Small, and the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing team have qualifying figured out. That was evidenced on Saturday at Iowa Speedway as Briscoe stormed to his sixth pole position of the NASCAR Cup Series season, and fifth of his last 11 attempts.
Briscoe turned a pole-winning lap time of 23.004 seconds (136.933 mph), which was enough to best William Byron by a margin of 0.084 seconds for the top qualifying time in the session.
The driver of the No. 19 Toyota has one race win this season, but he’s hoping to convert his latest pole position into win No. 2.
“I didn’t think that was going to hold. I figured it was going to be sixth or seventh. I was just a little too tight,” Briscoe explained. “I felt like I gave up a lot of time into [Turns] 1 and 2, and I knew my [Turns] 3 and 4 were good, but I didn’t think it would be enough. Really cool though to get another pole. Hopefully, can convert it to a win tomorrow.”

Kyle Busch Suffers Massive Head-On Impact Into Outside Wall in Iowa Practice
While it was a big day for Joe Gibbs Racing driver Chase Briscoe, Saturday wasn’t as kind to former JGR driver, and current Richard Childress Racing driver Kyle Busch, who suffered a major crash in NASCAR Cup Series practice at Iowa Speedway.
Busch, who complained about his rear tires chattering on his opening run of the session, returned to the track after receiving changes to cure his car’s issues. The cure worked as Busch turned the second-fastest lap of Group 1’s session. However, the cure didn’t work for long.
On his 18th lap of the session, Busch would wiggle loose in Turns 1 and 2, and as he attempted to wrangle the car, he shot hard-right, head-first into the outside wall. Busch was able to walk away from the crash, but his No. 8 team will have to thrash to prepare his backup car for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350.
