Ryan Blaney Holds Off Josh Berry to Secure ‘Round of 8’ Spot with Loudon Win
Team Penske’s bid for a fourth consecutive NASCAR Cup Series championship looks quite strong after the team’s drivers, Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano, combined to lead 263 of the 301 laps in Sunday’s Mobil 1 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
In the end, it was Ryan Blaney who scored the victory, which secured his advancement to the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.
However, it wasn’t an easy breeze to the win as Blaney encountered challenges from Josh Berry, who recovered from a spin early in Stage 2, in the closing laps. Berry took Blaney to the limit, but Blaney continued to defend expertly, and as Berry wore his tires out, Blaney cruised to his third win of the season, and 16th career win.
“Yeah, that was probably the hardest 20 laps that I drove. I was trying to kind of bide my time and kind of pull Josh a little bit. Then he really started coming, and I started to get super free. It was all I could do to hold him off, trying new lanes,” Blaney said post-race. “That was good racing and clean racing. I appreciate Josh for not throwing me the bumper when he could have.”
