Ross Chastain Passes Byron to Complete Coke 600 Last to First Challenge
William Byron was without a doubt the dominant driver in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet swept Stages 1, 2, and 3 of the race, and pocketed 30 stage points and three Playoff points as he led a race-high 283 laps.
However, when the pay window opened in the closing laps of the race, Ross Chastain, who started dead last, came to life. Chastain would make a daring pass on Byron with six laps remaining as they were both stuck behind lapped traffic (Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin), and Chastain wouldn’t look back as he charged to his first-career Coca-Cola 600 win.
Chastain said it was an accidental miscommunication with crew chief Phil Surgen, which he feels led to him having the car to beat in the closing laps.
“To drive on that final run in the World 600 and pass two cars that had been way better all night,” said Chastain. “Phil Surgen wanted me to pit two laps earlier. I went two laps longer just out of a bit of confusion. Man, that paid off at the end.”

Kyle Larson’s Double Attempt Ends in Pair of Crashes
Kyle Larson’s attempt at ‘The Double’ did not go to plan. Not at all. The driver, who had finally worked his way near the top 15 in the Indianapolis 500, crashed out in Turn 2 on Lap 92. However, had it not been for the early exit from the race by way of accident, Larson would have likely needed to exit the weather-delayed race early in order to make it to Charlotte Motor Speedway in time for the Coca-Cola 600.
Larson would arrive in time to start the Coca-Cola 600, and he would roll from the second starting spot. Initially, Larson looked good as he took the lead in the opening laps and led 34 laps. However, Larson would slap the wall around Lap 40, and then he would be swept up in a race-ending crash on Lap 246.
