TC Daily Pit Stop: Larson Charges to Third Win of NASCAR Cup Season; Busch Dumped by Chastain on Final Lap; Chaos Ensues In Opening Two Stages at Sonoma
TC Daily Pit Stop: Monday, June 10, 2024
Kyle Larson Marches Through the Field to Score Sonoma Victory
With his Playoff waiver in the rear-view mirror, Kyle Larson set out to notch his third win of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season Sunday at Sonoma Raceway. While Larson didn’t challenge for the lead for most of the day, the driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet simply bided his time, and when the race finally went green for the duration of the final Stage, he clawed his way to the front.
The charge to the lead, and win, was a combination of Larson’s incredible skill behind the wheel, and a strategy play by his crew chief Cliff Daniels, who chose to have Larson pit late in the green flag sequence, which gave his driver 13-lap fresher tires than the drivers he was battling for the win.
Michael McDowell would finish second as Martin Truex Jr., who had the second position held down on the final lap, ran out of gas in the final turn. Truex would finish 27th.

Video: Kyle Busch Gets Dumped by Ross Chastain for Fifth Spot on Final Lap at Sonoma
Kyle Busch was sitting inside the top-five heading into Turn 4 on the final lap of Sunday’s Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. If he could have held on, it would have marked his first top-five finish in his last six races. But with Ross Chastain bearing down on him with fresher tires, Busch expected he would at least hold on for a top-10 finish.
Then, Chastain ran through the left rear quarterpanel of Busch, which sent the driver of the No. 8 spinning out. After running out of fuel in the final turn, Busch would finish 12th.
