Friday Practice Leaves Drivers Unsure on 2024 Short Track Aerodynamic Package
Friday’s 50-minute practice session at Phoenix Raceway was an important checkpoint on the journey to solve the shortcomings of short track and road course racing in the NASCAR Cup Series.
As a result of an off-season test, NASCAR landed on a brand-new aero package, which features a simplified rear diffuser with fewer vertical strakes, and a three-inch rear spoiler — all the result of positive feedback from said testing session at Phoenix Raceway over the off-season.
That positivity has been left in the Arizona desert to die, after returning to the one-mile oval in March for an extended NASCAR Cup Series practice on Friday, allowing the entire field to get a handle on this new package… and by doing so, there seemed to be a consensus: It didn’t feel much different than before.

Sawalich Survives The Desert, Wins The General Tire 150 At Phoenix Raceway
Picking up where he left off last fall at Phoenix Raceway, William Sawalich took home the trophy in the General Tire 150 after officials called the race due to lightning and rain.
Sawalich was a strong contender leading 66 of the 115 laps total ran, only facing challenge from the Venturini Motorsports No. 20 and driver Gio Ruggiero.
“Not the way I wanted to win a race, but I knew we had the best car out there. Our Starkey SoundGear Toyota was really good all night. We kinda fell back in that first stint. The guys made a really good adjustment, and I’m super proud of them for doing that,” the Eden Prairie, MN native said post-race.
Ruggiero was second with Enfinger, Mosack, and Hingorani rounding out the top-five.
