Connor Zilisch Turns The Tables, Outduels Van Gisbergen for Sonoma Win
After a disappointing loss to Shane van Gisbergen a week ago in the NASCAR Xfinity Series event at the Chicago Street Course, Connor Zilisch had his mind on getting back to victory lane at Sonoma Raceway.
While SVG took the pole position for Saturday’s race, Zilisch remained a thorn in his side all day long, and on the final pit stop of the race, just before the end of Stage 2, Zilisch gained the track position advantage on SVG.
In the closing laps, Zilisch and SVG went toe-to-toe in an epic duel, and it was the 18-year-old Zilisch, who was able to come out on top of the thrilling, yet clean battle for the win.
“Yeah, man. First, hats off to Shane. That was awesome,” Zilisch said after the race. “All race long, I felt like we were racing each other with respect. I wheel-hopped a little bit going into [Turn] 7 that one time and got into him, but other than that, it was awesome to get to race against him, finally and battle with him the whole race long.”
William Sawalich finished third behind the JR Motorsports duo, and was followed by Nick Sanchez and Riley Herbst inside the top-five.

Shane van Gisbergen Dominates Cup Qualifying at Sonoma
Shane van Gisbergen will start from the pole in the NASCAR Cup Series for the second consecutive race weekend as he took the pole for Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway with a dominant performance in Saturday’s qualifying session.
SVG turned a fastest lap of 74.594 seconds (96.040 mph) to secure the top spot in qualifying by 0.250 seconds over Chase Briscoe, a four-time pole winner in 2025.
“I’m shaking. That was pretty full-on. I’m stoked to have RedBull on the car. Thank you to Trackhouse and Chevy, amazing car,” said van Gisbergen. “We weren’t very good in practice, but new tires fixed it. Hopefully, we can be good for the race. But what a cool day.”
