Bubba Wallace Nabs Emotional Crown Jewel Win in Brickyard 400 at Indy
Bubba Wallace ended a winless drought, which stretched back to September 2022, as he captured a win in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Wallace had to endure two overtime restart attempts and had to manage a dwindling fuel load to take the career-defining win, but he got it done by holding Kyle Larson at bay.
Wallace had a four-second lead with just six laps remaining in the event, and looked poised to breeze to his first win in one of NASCAR’s crown jewel events, but then Mother Nature intervened. Rain would bring out the caution, and eventually red flag with just four laps to go.
But it was a small shower in Turn 1, which only necessitated a quick clean up. The caution closed the field in on Wallace, which put his win in doubt. But the driver of the No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota Camry XSE kept his foot to the floor, and the gas tank had enough to get him to the finish in the end.
“I’m worn out. I thought things every which way besides driving a race car during that red flag. So proud of this Chumba Casino team. The adrenaline rush is crazy. I want to thank all of these people behind me, all the men and women of Airspeed for making this possible,” Wallace said. “To overcome so much and to put these people in Victory Lane, that’s what it’s all about. These people keep pushing me, believing in me. Man, just so proud.”
